The devastation caused by the severe earthquake in Haiti this week is
extensive, as we have all seen on our television screens. I want you
all to understand that the Diocese of Haiti is a constituent diocese of
The Episcopal Church (TEC); these are our brothers and sisters in the
church. We know them through General Convention, national committee
work, and gatherings of our Episcopal Province. Haiti is the largest
and fastest growing diocese in TEC, and they will need our help. Bishop
Zache Duracin and his wife survived, although Mrs. Duracin was injured,
but their home, the diocesan office and the cathedral have all
collapsed. What can you do?
- PRAY -- pray for those who have died, those who will die from lack
of medical services, those who are injured, those who lack food, water
and shelter; pray or the relief workers who risk their own health to
sustain others.
- GIVE -- The Episcopal Church is well-positioned to be of assistance
through Episcopal Relief and Development; they are already on the
ground, bringing assistance and supplies. Donations can be made online
at: https://www.er-d.org/donate-
select.php
- BE PATIENT -- we do not yet have a reliable conduit into Haiti to
deliver supplies, clothes, etc. The leadership of Christ Hospital is
reaching out to the Episcopal Hospital in Haiti that is apparently
still standing. This may be the most effective way for us to
participate in the relief and recovery efforts in both the short and
long term. When we know more, we will then know what items to collect
and how they may be effectively delivered.
